
New Zealand (NZL)
Tiaan Whelpton (born March 29, 2000, in Cape Town, South Africa) is a New Zealand sprinter specializing in the 100 meters. Originally a rugby player, he switched to athletics in his final year of high school before relocating to Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019.
He quickly emerged as one of the country’s top sprinters, winning the New Zealand U20 100m title in 2019. In 2022 and 2023, he equaled the New Zealand resident record of 10.18 seconds. His personal best improved to 10.14 seconds in May 2023 in Japan. That same year, he won the New Zealand 100m title and represented the country at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.
In January 2025, he set a new personal best of 6.50 seconds in the 60 meters at the ACT Open Athletics Championships, qualifying for the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China.
Off the track, Whelpton is passionate about Formula 1, rugby, photography, videography, and cars.
He continues to be a rising force in New Zealand athletics, with aspirations to compete at the highest level internationally.
